I recently spoke at a seminar for mobile apps that attracted audience from a variety of industries including airlines, restaurants, e-commerce retailing and utility payments. All of them were varied industries that required almost a similar approach to handling user navigation, ease of use, payment systems, and technology. While the essential architecture of most apps was similar, each business had a different story to tell about their success with customers.

I spent time speaking with several of these professionals and it was clear to me that the more successful ventures belonged to the team which took time to review, introspect and introduce changes to make their apps design better.

Application design is in many ways like the work of a playwright. There is strong resistance to change something that has already been created and the creator will try every trick in the book to maintain the status quo. However, once the team is open to reviewing its design and introduce amendments to make the application deliver better, things seem to change, almost magically. Of course, it is not magic. It is old fashioned user behavior.

Here are some of the most common things I noticed about these designs.

–       User Feedback: Many companies make the mistake of either ignoring or not making allowances for incorporating end user feedback. Cardinal mistake and one that needs to be corrected.

–       Enhanced Experience: With mobile technology on the fast track, an app developed a year back is already vintage. Are you making improvements on the experience?

–       Data Analysis: Is your app’s back end built to leverage the ocean of data that gets generated on transactions, geographical data and menu analytics? What value are you getting back from all this data and how are you harnessing it positively?

–       Learning from competition: This sounds easy but have you taken time to understand what drives your competition’s app? There is no shame in learning from the success of others.

–       Partnership and Alliances: Have you considered potential partnerships with other businesses to grow your own? There could be several complementary businesses like e-commerce sales and a reliable courier service to deliver the product to customers.
